Role Overview
The Senior Network Architect is responsible for leading the design, evolution, and modernization of a large-scale statewide network infrastructure supporting approximately 250 locations. This role serves as the technical authority for enterprise routing, security, cloud connectivity, and network architecture decisions. The position plays a critical role in the organizations transition from onpremises environments to a secure, resilient hybrid-cloud architecture leveraging AWS.
Key Responsibilities
Network Architecture & Strategy
  • Design and maintain scalable hub-and-spoke and mesh network architectures supporting a diverse, geographically distributed site footprint
  • Define network standards, patterns, and long-term architectural roadmaps aligned with modernization initiatives
  • Serve as the senior technical authority for enterprise routing, switching, and connectivity design decisions
Hybrid Cloud & AWS Connectivity
  • Architect and optimize secure, high-performance connectivity between onpremises infrastructure and AWS environments
  • Design and manage AWS networking components including VPCs, Transit Gateway, Direct Connect, routing, and security constructs
  • Ensure hybrid-cloud designs support resilience, scalability, and operational efficiency
Routing, Switching & Core Networking
  • Lead the design and optimization of a complex routing environment using EIGRP as the primary protocol
  • Implement and manage BGP for external connectivity and cloud peering
  • Support selective OSPF deployments where appropriate
  • Provide architectural oversight for Cisco-based enterprise and data center platforms
Security, Traffic Management & Availability
  • Oversee perimeter and internal security architecture using Fortigate (FortiOS) firewalls and VPN technologies
  • Manage application traffic flow and high availability using NetScaler and load balancing solutions
  • Ensure network designs meet security, performance, and availability requirements
Observability, Operations & Modernization
  • Utilize SolarWinds and enterprise monitoring tools to provide visibility into network health and performance
  • Lead proactive capacity planning, root cause analysis, and advanced troubleshooting efforts
  • Drive the transition from traditional hardware-centric networking to software-defined and cloud-native architectures
Required Qualifications
  • 10 or more years of experience in network engineering or infrastructure design
  • 4 or more years in a lead architect, principal engineer, or senior technical leadership role
  • Expert-level experience with Cisco IOS, IOS-XE, and NX-OS platforms
  • Deep hands-on knowledge of EIGRP and BGP routing protocols
  • Proven experience architecting AWS networking solutions, including VPC design, routing, security groups, and Direct Connect
  • Strong experience with Fortigate firewalls and enterprise VPN implementations
  • Experience with enterprise monitoring and alerting platforms, including SolarWinds NPM and NCM
  • Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or equivalent professional experience
  • CCNP Enterprise or Data Center certification
Preferred Qualifications
  • CCIE certification
  • AWS Certified Solutions Architect Professional
  • Experience with software-defined networking or large-scale network modernization initiatives
  • Experience supporting highly distributed, multi-site public sector or enterprise environments
