Developer IV - Mainframe Job Summary: Talent Software Services is in search of a Developer IV - Mainframe for a contract position in Columbia, SC. The opportunity will be for five months with a strong chance for a long-term extension. Position Summary: Responsible for analysis, design, programming, and implementation of complex application tasks and projects. Devise feasible, logical procedures to resolve business problems through the use of computer resources. Formulate scope and objectives through research to develop or modify complex systems. Review detailed specifications and recommend modifications. Design, code, test and debug complex application programs. This role operates within the Commercial Claims application development team, working on core commercial claims systems in a mainframe environment. Client is looking for a Mainframe Developer / Programmer experienced in COBOL-based systems. This is a Developer IV level role, meaning the candidate should also have strong program analysis and systems analysis capabilities. The developer will work on complex commercial claims systems, which are large integrated applications within the organization. The role requires collaboration with multiple developers due to the complexity of the system. Key Responsibilities: Application Development & System Implementation Perform analysis, design, programming, and implementation of systems and procedures to solve complex business or scientific problems. Design, code, test and debug complex application programs. Evaluate interrelationships in immediate programming areas to determine how changes in one program affect other related areas. Apply conversions and enhancements to business systems. Design and develop IT systems and devise new sources of data and techniques. Project Deliverables Produce deliverables related to the assigned project. Participate in the full systems life cycle including design, coding, testing, implementation, maintenance, and support of complex applications delivered on time and within budget. Collaboration & Requirements Analysis Work closely with customers, business analysts, and team members to understand business requirements driving technical solutions. Ensure solutions align with business and IT strategies and comply with architectural standards. Assist in post-implementation support and system enhancements. Testing & Documentation Test modified programs and create test files and data, verify logic, debug applications, and write documentation. Leadership & Technical Guidance Provide guidance to lower-level programmers and analysts. Act as an internal consultant by providing technical guidance on complex projects. Determine and resolve problems with systems analysts, programmers, and users. The candidate will be working on the core commercial claims systems, responsible for: Analysis, design, coding, testing, and implementation of business requirements. Working in a collaborative team environment within the Commercial Claims development group. Communicating effectively with IT teams and stakeholders across multiple levels of the organization. Demonstrating initiative and a willingness to learn and grow within the team. Organization consists of 60+ application development staff responsible for core commercial claims systems. Teams are divided into smaller management groups but operate in a matrixed environment based on skills and project needs. Teamwork and collaboration are a high priority and critical to project success. The organization emphasizes a supportive environment with strong teamwork. Qualifications: Comprehensive understanding of application development, quality assurance, and integration methodologies. Experience working in mainframe, midrange, and/or PC/LAN environments. High level of technical proficiency in programming languages, platform capabilities, and systems analysis/program design methods. Excellent analysis, decision-making, and problem-solving skills. Ability to demonstrate logical abstract thinking and adhere to project goals and deadlines. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Ability to work under pressure and function effectively within a team environment. Strong interpersonal skills and team building capabilities. Familiarity with project management concepts. Ability to assess requirements, alternatives, and risks/benefits for projects with varying levels of impact. Strong attention to detail. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, clients, and vendors. In-depth understanding of organizational functions and inter-relationships. Required Technologies: COBOL, DB2, JCL & Mainframe Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or other job-related degree. Degree Equivalency: 4 years of job-related work experience, or 2 years of job-related experience plus an Associate's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or other job-related degree.
