Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit:The ITS Enterprise Technology Infrastructure team manages the organization's network, communication systems, IT facilities, research infrastructure, enterprisesystems, and data infrastructure to ensure robust, secure, and high-performance IT operations. This department supports critical technological functions across the enterprise, enabling seamlessconnectivity, advanced research capabilities, and efficient data management.
Position Summary:The primary purpose of this position is to architect, manage, and maintain high-performance/high-availability information transport systems infrastructure that supports enterprise technology services:
- Provides cabling/wiring services for UNCG's Layer 1 network/communications infrastructure.
- Designs, manages, and installs Commscope and Corning cabling systems in accordance with University design guidelines and standards.
- Ensures the timely repair of UNCG's inside cable plant and outside cable plant.
- Collaborates with other ITS teams, the UNCG Facilities department, Designers, and Contractors to ensure UNCG's structured cabling systems are properly designed, built, and protected during construction and renovation projects.
Minimum Qualifications:- Mid-career with Master's and 1-2 yrs experience; or Bachelor's and 2-4 yrs experience; or equivalent education/experience.

Key Responsibility:Fiber Infrastructure
Essential Tasks:- Provide operational oversight and manage the campus fiber optic infrastructure, including duct bank, fiber optic backbone, and building tie-ins.
- Maintain records of fiber infrastructure, including allocations and usage.
- Respond to calls on the UNCG Fiber Identification Line and provide emergency response to fiber violations.
- Maintain and manage agreements with UNCG departments and external entities, as appropriate, to provide request fulfillment, emergency break/fix, and outside plant locate services.

Key Responsibility:Network Wiring
Essential Tasks:- Manage the University's inside cable plant, providing operational oversight in the implementation and management of Layer 1 communications infrastructure for data center, building distribution, and telecom facilities that enable network connectivity.
- Design, develop, and document processes and procedures required to operate and maintain network wiring, including horizontal and vertical cabling.
- Design and manage University telecommunications standards and ensure publication as needed.

Essential Tasks:- Lead and manage request fulfillment for moves, adds, and changes to Layer 1 communications infrastructure.
- Manage the customer quote development and delivery process, providing scope of work, budgetary estimates (one-time and ongoing) for information transport systems and installations as requested, and expected timelines.
- Develop implementation plans and manage work activities that may include procurement, coordination with other entities, site visits and inspections, and chargeback to the customer.

Key Responsibility:Construction / Renovation Support
Essential Tasks:- Provide telecommunications transport system design and consulting support on new construction and renovation projects.
- As the liaison between construction project managers and ITS, ensure functional teams understand deliverables for each project, including scope of work, expected timelines, and budgetary constraints.
- Actively participate in construction projects, providing technical reviews, written comments, inspections, and escalation support at each phase from inception to completion.
- Evaluate design and budgeting alternatives to provide the most efficient information transport capability using current design standards.

Essential Tasks:- Utilize knowledge base and expertise to develop and execute long-range plans for the University's Layer 1 infrastructure, including underground fiber optic backbone, aerial fiber runs, and horizontal/vertical network cabling.
- Identify and provide funding requirements to ensure the continued operation of Layer 1 fiber optic and Ethernet infrastructure.
- Research new technology to determine feasibility, costs, and compatibility with current systems.
- Present highly complex technical solutions in an understandable format to critical leadership and client stakeholders, both internal and external to UNCG.
