Position Description: This opportunity will provide systems engineering and integration support and technical leadership to the Systems Planning and Technical Leadership Branch, NASAs Space Technology Mission Directorate (STMD), the Technology Demonstration Missions (TDM) Program, and the Space Nuclear Propulsion (SNP) subproject. Personnel will work closely with the Project Manager(s) and/or Project Lead(s) within the projects and will coordinate and integrate with personnel supporting the project including personnel representing Agency-level Mission Directorate(s) or other Centers with which the project(s) share an interface. Personnel will provide leadership and/or support for the development of key systems engineering products supporting SNP technical maturation efforts for both Nuclear Thermal Propulsion and Nuclear Electric Propulsion and will support subsequent activities where these products are assessed and matured. Responsibilities: Provide guidance and/or support in developing programmatic processes and documentation, process definition, and other systems engineering management and planning activities. Provide guidance to enable and aid the development of systems engineering activities and products. Provide assessments, independent analyses, and recommendations as necessary in areas including, but not limited to, systems engineering processes and documentation. Provide guidance in response to systems, technical, and management questions or issues affecting performance and management processes. Develop, document, and implement plans and processes that support technology maturation. Provide support: o Maintaining integrated schedules. o Task and action tracking. o Routine status and communication activities. o Compiling required inputs and reporting materials. o Ensuring proper documentation practices. o Maintaining essential program records to enable organized and traceable project execution. Participate in reviews, meetings, working groups, task teams, and trade studies. Develop and/or provide guidance for the development of key briefings to the Project and/or interfacing organizations. Provide technical and strategic leadership as delegated by the project(s). Qualifications: A degree in a STEM field such as Aerospace, Industrial, Systems, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering or a related technical discipline such as Computer Science, Mathematics, or Physics is required. A degree from an ABET accredited university is preferred. A minimum of 10 years of experience is required, but the expected range is 10 - 15 years of relevant experience in Systems Engineering and Integration. A successful candidate should possess or be experienced in: Technical integration. Integrating solutions to issues. Strong team leadership skills. Organizing and leading integrated discussions. The engineer will work both independently at times and in an integrated team performing engine systems and system engineering-related activities of the nuclear rocket engine project. As a key member of the SNP team, primary duties will include: Expertise in Nuclear Core Multiphysics (MP) Modeling: Experience with the physics involved in nuclear core dynamics, including heat transfer, fluid mechanics, structures, and nuclear engineering. Proficiency in at least one of these areas, with a strong focus on nuclear engineering, is essential. Nuclear Reactor Operations: Familiarity with nuclear reactor startup, shutdown, cooldown, testing, and controls is highly desired. Experience with simulating these operational phases is a plus. Nuclear Reactor Core Materials: Understanding of the materials and nuclear properties of nuclear reactor cores, particularly those used in nuclear thermal propulsion systems. Simulation Software Proficiency: Experience with simulation tools such as MCNP and OpenMC is highly desired. Familiarity with MOOSE is also valuable. Nuclear Fuel Performance: Solid understanding of nuclear fuel performance, including the ability to model the nuclear, chemical, and mechanical effects of fuel under varying operational conditions. Create/utilize stability analysis tools to assess engine stability from ROCETS model results. Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration: Proven ability to interface successfully across multiple organizations and disciplines, ideally in a leadership or collaborative capacity. Software Integration: Strong ability to efficiently integrate disparate software systems and work comfortably in a networked environment, particularly on Linux systems and high-performance computing (HPC) platforms. Modeling & Simulation Software Development: Experience with M&S software development, including parallel processing and efficient solution algorithms, is highly desirable. Coordinate, develop, and present technical materials related to engine system performance and testing in support of design milestone reviews and anomaly investigations. Document and maintain test and data analysis processes in written work instructions. Participate in relevant trade teams. Identify and pursue resolution of issues. A degree from an ABET accredited institution is preferred. Typically, educational requirements are the equivalent of a Ph.D. with a minimum 4 years of experience; MS with at least 8 years of experience, or a BS with at least 10 years of experience. Proficiency is preferred with: Avionics definition, design, development, testing, evaluation, implementation, and integration experience. Discipline expert in avionics sensors, controls, electronics, digital signal processing, GN&C attitude determination and pointing applications. Experience with hardware including rate gyro assemblies, inertial measurement units, inertial navigation units, Global Positioning systems (GPS) aided inertial navigation units, and reaction wheel assemblies. Excellent organizational skills and an ability to perform technical tasks independently is required. Star ID will be required to obtain access to MSFC. Proof of U.S. Citizenship is required.
