Principal AI Engineer
McKesson Columbus, Ohio
McKesson is an impact-driven, Fortune 10 company that touches virtually every aspect of healthcare. We are known for delivering insights, products, and services that make quality care more accessible and affordable. Here, we focus on the health, happiness, and well-being of you and those we serve - we care. What you do at McKesson matters. We foster a culture where you can grow, make an impact, and are empowered to bring new ideas. Together, we thrive as we shape the future of health for patients, our communities, and our people. If you want to be part of tomorrow's health today, we want to hear from you. The Principal AI Engineer provides the highest level of individual-contributor technical leadership for the company's AI platform, operating one level above the Lead AI Engineer role. This person sets the multi-year architecture strategy for agentic and LLM-powered systems - spanning model strategy, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), tool/connector ecosystems, and evaluation/governance tooling - across every team that builds on the AI platform, not just one. In a highly regulated healthcare environment, the Principal AI Engineer resolves the hardest, most ambiguous technical problems facing the platform, is a primary technical voice with executive leadership on AI strategy and risk, and shapes how the entire engineering organization adopts AI safely and effectively. Success is measured by the durability and adoption of the technical strategy this role sets across multiple teams, this role's ability to unblock cross-organizational technical risk before it becomes a delivery or compliance problem, and its influence on AI investment decisions at the executive level. Key Responsibilities Enterprise AI Strategy: Own the multi-year technical strategy and roadmap for the AI platform across all teams building on it, not a single product or team - model strategy, RAG/retrieval architecture, connector ecosystems, and evaluation frameworks. Technical Authority: Serve as the final technical escalation point for the hardest, most ambiguous architecture and reliability problems on the AI platform, spanning multiple teams and systems. Cross-Team Standards: Set architecture, security, and evaluation standards that multiple Lead AI Engineers and their teams adopt; audit and evolve those standards as the platform and threat landscape change. Executive Advisory: Serve as a primary technical voice to VP- and executive-level leadership on AI platform strategy, model risk, and investment trade-offs. Deep Technical Delivery: Personally lead architecture and prototyping for the organization's highest-ambiguity, highest-risk AI initiatives - the problems no existing team or pattern already solves. Mentorship at Scale: Develop Lead and Senior AI Engineers into stronger technical leaders through design review, technical coaching, and structured knowledge-sharing across teams. Responsible AI & Governance: Shape enterprise-wide AI governance policy - model risk review, connector/tool approval frameworks, and PHI-handling standards - in partnership with Legal/Compliance/Privacy leadership. Vendor & Model Strategy at Scale: Own evaluation and long-term strategy for foundation model providers and AI infrastructure vendors across the company, not just a single team's stack. External Technical Representation: Represent the company's AI engineering capability externally - industry forums, partner/vendor technical relationships, and recruiting for senior technical talent. Organizational Impact: Influence AI platform direction and investment across the broader enterprise, extending beyond a single business unit. Priority will be given to candidates who reside in the Columbus, OH metropolitan area. We are unable to provide sponsorship for this role, presently or in the future. Minimum Requirements Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience; typically 12+ years of software engineering experience, including 6+ years focused on AI/ML, LLM, or NLP systems in production and 3+ years operating as a senior individual-contributor technical leader. Fewer years required with a relevant Master's or Doctorate. Critical Skills One level of demonstrated technical leadership above a Lead AI Engineer - e.g., setting technical direction and standards across multiple teams, not just owning architecture for a single team or platform area. Proven track record setting technical strategy that multiple teams adopt, not just delivering within one team's roadmap. Deep, hands-on expertise building production LLM applications at scale: prompt engineering, RAG, agentic workflows, tool use, and evaluation harnesses - with the judgment to know which patterns will and won't hold up over multiple years. Experience with commercial large language model APIs (e.g., Anthropic, OpenAI) and tool-integration protocols such as Model Context Protocol (MCP), including evaluating emerging alternatives. Strong software engineering fundamentals: Python and/or Java, REST APIs, event-driven architecture, microservices, and cloud-native design (Azure preferred; AWS/GCP acceptable). Experience with vector/graph retrieval systems, embeddings, and knowledge-base architectures at production scale across multiple products. Deep working knowledge of LLMOps/MLOps: usage attribution, cost/spend monitoring, abuse detection, and model evaluation pipelines, including designing these systems from scratch. Demonstrated ability to influence and align senior engineering and executive stakeholders without direct authority. Deep familiarity with regulated/healthcare data environments and AI governance frameworks (model risk review, connector approval tiers, PHI handling). Preferred Qualifications Advanced degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) in Computer Science, AI/ML, or a related technical field. Prior experience as a Principal, Staff, or Distinguished Engineer setting AI/ML technical strategy across multiple teams inside healthcare IT or another highly regulated industry. Track record of publications, patents, open-source contributions, or industry speaking on applied AI/LLM systems. Experience shaping enterprise-wide AI governance policy in partnership with Legal, Compliance, and Privacy leadership. Additional Skills Deep awareness of the fast-moving GenAI/agentic landscape and a demonstrated ability to separate durable technical bets from hype. Experience managing strategic relationships with AI infrastructure vendors and model providers at the enterprise level. Exceptional written and verbal communication for executive, board-level, and external technical audiences. We are proud to offer a competitive compensation package at McKesson as part of our Total Rewards. This is determined by several factors, including performance, experience and skills, equity, regular job market evaluations, and geographical markets. The pay range shown below is aligned with McKesson's pay philosophy, and pay will always be compliant with any applicable regulations. Credit Acceptance Corporation San Francisco, California
At Credit Acceptance, we are building on the foundation of a successful business while investing in the future through technology, data, AI, and continuous improvement. As we continue to evolve, our Team Members play an active role in improving experiences, driving meaningful change, and shaping the future of our business. We foster an environment where people are empowered to contribute ideas, develop their careers, make an impact, and help lead our continued transformation. Our Engineering teams are helping shape the future of Credit Acceptance through innovation. Team Members collaborate across the organization to solve complex challenges, build impactful solutions, challenge the status quo, and support informed business decisions. We value curiosity, continuous learning, and new ideas from people who are passionate about driving modernization and meaningful business impact. Outcomes and Activities Enterprise target architecture: Convene the principal and staff engineers who own each domain to define the end-state architecture across originations, servicing, marketplace, data, and AI, and use it to drive the multi-year plan. Ensure every component has a defined interface with stated inputs and outputs, every unmade decision has a written principle standing in for it, and the document states honestly how close the organization is to the end state. Publish the architecture, including the tradeoffs that were rejected and why. Agentic AI architecture across the enterprise: Own the enterprise agent architecture spanning servicing and collections, the dealer side, originations, and internal engineering and back-office workflows, built on one common foundation rather than one stack per team. Establish a governed way for agents to discover and call business capabilities, data, and tools, using the Model Context Protocol as the integration layer. Define an identity and authorization model that treats an agent as a first-class actor with its own least-privilege entitlements, along with observability, evaluation, and cost controls that work consistently for every agent. Set policy on what an agent may decide independently versus what stays with a person, and define where that line moves and on what evidence. Design the architecture to produce an examiner-ready record of what each agent saw, recommended, and touched, and set the evaluation and adversarial testing approach that makes agent outcomes defensible. Ensure the same foundation and controls apply to agents built by outside firms on the company's behalf. Migration off on-premises infrastructure: Own the technical strategy for migrating transactional and analytical workloads off on-premises infrastructure to the company's strategic targets - AWS for transactional workloads and Databricks for analytical workloads - determining what lifts and shifts, what replatforms, what gets re-architected on the way versus after, and what the steady-state cost looks like. Own the resilience and recovery architecture for the target state. Data platform architecture: Set the architecture for change-data-capture-based ingestion, streaming where warranted, and a modern warehouse with no job-scheduling dependency, moving the organization from largely batch analytical data movement to real time. Help settle the open question of who owns the transactional and analytical data models. Real-time decisioning, model serving, and experimentation: Architect for pricing and credit model and scorecard updates that drop in as a layer rather than requiring a multi-quarter rebuild, and for an experimentation platform that supports orders of magnitude more concurrent experiments than a conventional release process allows. Marketplace and search architecture: Own the architecture and interfaces for a unified vehicle inventory, consumer search, and lead routing platform, ensuring the data model supports more than one class of seller from the start. AI-native engineering practice: Define the golden path for how software is specified, generated, reviewed, tested, and deployed, including the analyzers and gates that enforce it, and measure the inputs to that practice rather than just the outputs. Hold the build-versus-buy bar for AI capability, building what is core competency and about to scale, and renting the rest. Performance and peak readiness: Own the instrumentation, baseline, and remediation architecture needed to meet the standard that no page takes more than one second. Own peak-event headroom, including understanding the limits of each system and maintaining tested degradation levers ahead of need. Operating approach: Move the organization from project-shaped systems toward owned platforms with stated contracts. Document every component's inputs and outputs, and be ready to argue why closely coupled components should not be consolidated into one. Work toward a two-week requirement-to-production iteration bar, treating architecture that cannot be delivered incrementally as unfinished. Name what comes off the plan whenever a change in direction is requested. Make the call and own the outcome on architectural recommendations. Treat security, privacy, auditability, and regulatory obligation as design inputs from the start in this regulated environment. Hands-on, not hands-off: This is not optional. Stay personally engaged in the technical work rather than directing it from a distance. Join design reviews, write proofs of concept, read code, and engage in incident analysis. This hands-on time does not replace the work the teams own, and it is not a fallback when delivery slips. Every engineer in the organization will read how you write, how you argue a design, how you handle being wrong, and how you treat engineers who disagree with you as the bar. Staff and principal engineers should be measurably better at this work for having worked with you. Success measures: A published target architecture the domain owners agree with and that the annual and long-range plans are actually written against; an enterprise agent foundation that internal teams and partners build on, with access controls, evaluation, and audit records in place; a credible, dated, costed migration path off on-premises infrastructure and demonstrated progress against it; measured improvement in chosen input metrics such as latency, availability, recovery objectives, deployment frequency, and experiment throughput; growth in the number of principal and staff engineers who are better at this work as a result of this role; and architectural decisions that stop being relitigated because the reasoning was written down and the interfaces were clear. Competencies Customer Empathy: Customer Empathy is the ability to understand the perspectives, pain points, and experiences of customers. It involves actively putting oneself in the customer's shoes, comprehending their needs and challenges, and using that understanding to provide a better, more customer-centric experience. Engineering Excellence: Engineering Excellence is about bringing great craftsmanship and thought leadership to deliver an outstanding product that delights customers and solves for the business. This involves the pursuit and achievement of high standards, best practices, innovation, and superior solutions. One Team: A One Team mindset refers to a collaborative approach across the organization, where individuals work together seamlessly, without boundaries, as a single, cohesive team. Shared goals, open communication and mutual support create a sense of collective purpose. This enables teams to navigate challenges and pursue shared objectives more effectively. Owner's Mindset: Owner's Mindset involves adopting a set of behaviors that reflect a sense of responsibility, accountability, strategic thinking, and a proactive approach to managing your domain. As an owner, you understand the business and your domain(s) deeply and solve for the right outcome for the domain(s) and the business. Requirements Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or closely related field of study; or equivalent work experience Minimum 10 years of software engineering experience or comparable depth of experience A track record of setting and delivering multi-year technical strategy at enterprise scale, as an individual contributor rather than through a reporting line. Depth in distributed systems architecture, and in at least two of: agentic or LLM-based systems in production; large-scale cloud migration of transactional systems; modern data platform and lakehouse architecture; machine learning platform and model serving; high-traffic consumer or marketplace applications. Architecture ownership of agentic or LLM-based systems that reached production, including how tool and data access were governed, how the system was evaluated, and what its failure modes turned out to be. Demonstrated ownership of a legacy-to-modern migration of systems the business runs on, including the sequencing, the cost case, and the failure modes, with production revenue at stake rather than only familiarity with the concept. Hands-on credibility today: actively reads code, writes proofs of concept, joins design reviews, and participates in incident analysis. Evidence of influence without authority across organizational boundaries, including work that changed direction at the executive level. Strong written communication; architecture here is carried by documents that other people can act on without the author in the room. Demonstrated ability to develop staff and principal engineers, and to raise the technical bar of engineers not directly managed. Experience delivering in a regulated industry, or a clear ability to work inside audit, security, and compliance constraints without treating them as an obstacle. MS Dynamics Solution Architect
CSZNet Inc Washington, Washington DC
CFSA requires a senior, deeply hands-on Solution Architect resource to serve as the technical design authority for STAAND (Stronger Together Against Abuse and Neglect in DC), the District's federally certified Comprehensive Child Welfare Information System (CCWIS). STAAND is a person-centric, AI-enabled platform built on Microsoft Dynamics 365 and the Power Platform hosted in a Government Community Cloud (GCC) tenant, with Azure services operating in Microsoft's commercial cloud. It supports CFSA social workers, supervisors, private agency partners, providers, resource parents, and District sister agencies across nine functional modules - Intake and Investigations, Case Management, ICPC, Finance (Contracts, Service Logs, and Fiscal), Provider, Eligibility and Subsidy, Placement, Services, and Management Reports - plus six external portals (Mandated Reporter, MPD, NYTD, OSSE, Resource Parent, and Community). STAAND also fields CORA, an AI assistant supporting natural-language search and AI-assisted contact notes among other use cases. The Resource will own architecture, security design, AI engineering, and the platform-release change cadence required to keep STAAND current and improving. This is a build-and-design role, not an advisory or oversight role. The Resource is expected to personally configure, code, prototype, review, and troubleshoot in the platform while serving as the credible technical voice to CFSA executive leadership, STAAND Product Team, OCTO, Microsoft, and Federal Partners (ACF/Children's Bureau). The Resource will work under the direct supervision of the District DevOps Manager. Scope of Work and Responsibilities 3.1 Solution and Platform Architecture • Own and maintain the authoritative STAAND architecture: logical and physical data models, Dataverse table and relationship design, solution segmentation, environment strategy, and integration topology. • Personally build in the platform - model-driven app configuration, plug-ins and custom APIs (C#/.NET), PCF controls, TypeScript/JavaScript client extensions, Power Fx, and plug-in pipeline optimization. • Establish and enforce architecture standards, design patterns, naming conventions, and technical debt registers across all modules and portals. • Chair design authority review for significant changes; sign off on solution designs before build. • Diagnose deep platform issues: performance degradation, API and service-protection limits, plug-in execution ordering, solution layering conflicts, storage growth, portal rendering. • Maintain architecture artifacts sufficient to satisfy CCWIS review, federal audit, and District IT governance. 3.2 Cross-Cloud Architecture: GCC and Commercial Azure • Design, document, and harden the boundary between the GCC Dynamics/Power Platform tenant and Azure commercial-cloud services. • Define what data may traverse that boundary, in what form (de-identified, tokenized, aggregated, or full record), under what authorization, and with what logging - including explicit architectural boundaries for protected data categories such as Medicaid Enrollment. • Implement cross-tenant identity, managed identities, service principals, Key Vault secret lifecycle, private networking, and API gateway patterns. • Maintain a defensible position on data residency and FedRAMP authorization boundaries for every commercial-cloud service in use, and present that position to auditors and federal reviewers. 3.3 AI and Agentic Development • Serve as hands-on technical lead for CFSA's AI capability, including CORA and its expansion into agentic workflows. • Design, build, evaluate, and productionize agents in Azure AI Foundry and Copilot Studio: tool and function calling, orchestration and multi-agent patterns, grounding and retrieval over Dataverse and document stores, prompt and context engineering, structured output, and human-in-the-loop checkpoints. • Own AI evaluation discipline: golden datasets, automated evals, groundedness and hallucination measurement, regression testing on model or prompt changes, latency and cost benchmarking, controlled rollout. • Manage the AI model lifecycle - track model releases and deprecations, run comparative evaluation before adopting a new model, execute migrations without regression to worker-facing quality. • Implement responsible AI controls appropriate to a child welfare setting: content safety, PII/PHI handling, bias and fairness testing, explainability, audit logging of AI-influenced actions, and clear framing of AI output as decision support rather than decision making. • Support predictive and analytic capability aligned to agency mission priorities, ensuring models are validated, monitored for drift, and governed. • Build reusable AI platform assets - prompt libraries, agent templates, evaluation harnesses, observability dashboards. 3.4 Application and Platform Security • Own the security architecture of STAAND end to end; serve as technical counterpart to the agency ISSO, OCTO security, and District privacy officials. • Apply and evidence compliance with OCTO IT policies (octo.dc.gov/page/it-policies), NIST SP 800-53, FISMA, FedRAMP, HIPAA, 45 CFR 1355 (CCWIS), Title IV-E confidentiality, and District data protection law including DC Code 28-3851 et seq. breach notification obligations. • Design and enforce least privilege: Dataverse business unit and role architecture, row/column-level security, portal web roles and table permissions, privileged access management, separation of duties for finance and eligibility functions. • Lead secure SDLC: threat modeling, secure code review, static and dynamic analysis, dependency and supply-chain scanning, secrets management, remediation tracking with severity-based SLAs. • Support penetration tests, vulnerability assessments, and audit response; own STAAND-assigned POA&M items. • Define AI-specific security requirements: prompt injection defenses, tool-permission scoping, data exfiltration prevention, agent action auditing. • Contribute to incident response, continuity, and disaster recovery planning; validate RTO/RPO through periodic exercises. 3.5 Continuous Improvement and Release Management • Own the STAAND change pipeline from enhancement request through design, build, test, release, and post-release verification, including published release notes and coordination with the CISA training organization. • Plan and execute against Microsoft's Dynamics 365 biannual release waves and Power Platform service updates: early-access testing in a dedicated environment, deprecation and breaking-change assessment, and a documented impact and remediation plan per wave. • Evaluate new platform, Azure, and AI capabilities against the STAAND roadmap; run structured proofs of concept and make evidence-based adopt / trial / hold / retire recommendations. • Maintain a rolling multi-year technical roadmap balancing stabilization, platform health, security, federal compliance, and innovation. • Drive performance, reliability, and cost optimization - capacity and license consumption, Azure spend, storage tiering, API efficiency. • Advance DevOps maturity: source-controlled solutions, automated build and deploy pipelines, environment refresh, automated regression testing, release quality metrics. • Maintain and report the technical issues and risk register with mitigation owners and timelines. 3.6 Data, Interoperability, and Federal Reporting • Own the data architecture supporting AFCARS, NCANDS, NYTD, CFSR, and Title IV-E reporting, including lineage, quality rules, exception handling, and submission validation. • Design and maintain bi-directional exchanges with District and external partners consistent with CCWIS interoperability requirements. • Establish automated data quality controls, duplicate person detection and merge integrity, and reconciliation with legacy records. 3.7 Stakeholder and Senior Leadership Engagement • Translate between social work practice and technical architecture; observe real workflow with intake workers, investigators, case managers, placement staff, and fiscal teams before designing for it. • Brief the CFSA IT Steering Committee Members, CIO, STAAND Product Leadership, OCTO leadership, Council oversight staff, court monitors, and ACF/Children's Bureau reviewers, calibrating to each audience. • Serve as principal technical liaison to Microsoft (Industry Solutions Delivery, Customer Success, product groups) and to implementation and support vendors; hold them to architectural and quality standards. • Author decision memos, architecture decision records, briefing decks, and federal reporting content requiring minimal editing. • Mentor CFSA staff and other contract resources; build internal capability and reduce single-point-of-failure dependency. Full time
CFSA requires a senior, deeply hands-on Solution Architect resource to serve as the technical design authority for STAAND (Stronger Together Against Abuse and Neglect in DC), the District's federally certified Comprehensive Child Welfare Information System (CCWIS).
