This role will serve as the senior technical authority responsible for translating customer requirements into scalable, manufacturable, and commercially viable rack systems. As the Sr. Principal Hyperscale Rack Engineer , youwill operate at the intersection of engineering, customer engagement, and program execution - driving end-to-end rack architecture across mechanical, power, thermal, electrical, and software domains. Success in this role requires deep technical expertise, strong commercial acumen, and the ability to lead complex programs while influencing both internal and external stakeholders. What will you do? Serve as the lead architect and development manager for complex rack-level solutions, owning system-level design decisions across mechanical, electrical, power, thermal, networking, and software integration domains. Translate ambiguous or evolving customer requirements into clear program frameworks, ensuring alignment between customer expectations and engineering execution. Demonstrate strong commercial awareness by effectively managing customer expectations, pushing back when requirements introduce risk or inefficiency, and confidently addressing challenging technical and cost-related questions. Drive cross-functional alignment across all departments (executives, engineering, supply chain, manufacturing, and program) to ensure cohesive solution development with emphasis on Bill of Materials (BOM) management and scheduling. Own rack-level architecture including power distribution design, thermal strategies (air and liquid cooling), cable routing, serviceability, and manufacturability. Provide deep technical guidance on rack infrastructure including PDUs, busbars, liquid cooling systems (CDUs, manifolds, QDs), airflow design, and high-density compute integration. Oversee architecture decisions impacting performance, cost, scalability, and deployment efficiency. Drive program execution from concept through production, ensuring schedules are clearly defined, tracked, and met. Apply strong program management discipline: define milestones, identify risks early, escalate issues proactively, and hold cross-functional teams accountable to commitments. Drive readiness support calls internally from initial NPI scoping to prototyping to mass production, ensuring all systems are operable together from a power, thermal, and software standpoint. Partner with customers and internal stakeholders to continuously refine designs based on deployment feedback and operational learnings. Collaborate with compliance and certification teams to ensure mechanical designs meet global regulatory requirements (e.g., UL, CE, ISTA, ASTM). Mentor and guide engineers across disciplines, establishing best practices in rack system architecture and integration. Understanding of rack installation constraints, maintenance access, and serviceability in rack mechanical infrastructure. Conduct root cause analysis and corrective actions for mechanical failures or field issues. May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned. How will you get here? Education: Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or related field is required Experience: Minimum of 10 years' experience in engineering, systems integration, or data center hardware design. Minimum of 3 years' rack-level (L11) solution design and integration experience. Minimum of 3 years' switch/server (L10) experience, including compute, storage, or networking hardware integration. Proven ability to drive the development and execution of complex rack solutions for hyperscale or large-scale data center environments, managing 12-18 month lifecycles and portfolios valued at hundreds of millions of dollars. Familiarity with industry standards (EIA, ORV3, OCP) and global power architectures. Demonstrated experience working directly with customers in technical and commercially sensitive environments. Strong background in program execution, including schedule ownership, risk management, and cross-functional leadership. Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration skills - a must. Strong understanding of mechanical systems, integration strategies, and program management. Hands-on experience with prototype fabrication and testing (mechanical S&V, software burn-in and test validation). Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Capable of assessing projects, articulating risks, and developing project milestones. Creative, self-motivated, accountable, and team-oriented. Able to work independently with minimal oversight. Familiarity with hardware/software traceability, manufacturing data, RMA systems, and fleet-level quality metrics. Experience mentoring engineers or leading cross-functional technical projects without direct authority. Familiarity with automated test frameworks, CI pipelines, data visualization, or statistical failure analysis. How Success Is Measured Staff-level ownership of ambiguous, multi-component investigations from problem definition through verified corrective-action closure. Predictable delivery of 2-6 month diagnostic and process-improvement work, with risks, dependencies, deadlines, and documentation actively managed. Reduced failure-analysis cycle time, no-fault-found rate, recurring failures, and escapes, using baseline-to-target metrics. Production-quality automation and diagnostic methods adopted across the team, with increased coverage, reuse, and maintainability. Cross-functional HW/FW/SW/Manufacturing alignment on priorities, decisions, and corrective actions, with verified follow-through and monitoring. Head of Hardware Design
Flux San Francisco, California
Job Description Job Description Why Flux Flux is taking the hard out of hardware. To do this, we're building the world's first AI hardware engineer. Founded in 2019, our platform enables anyone to go from idea to manufacturable board using nothing more than a natural language prompt. This democratizes a process that has historically required years of specialized expertise. We're going after a $15B+ electronic design automation market, backed by 8VC, Bain Capital Ventures, Liquid 2 Ventures, Outsiders Fund, Figma board member John Lilly, and GitHub founder Tom Preston-Werner. In February 2026, we closed a total of $37M in funding to accelerate that mission. What happens when we unlock the ability for anyone to make hardware? We fundamentally reshape the world. That's our mission, and we're just getting started. The Role We're looking for an experienced electrical engineering leader who will own the hardware design practices and guiding principles of our platform. You'll steer the evolution of our ECAD tool's core capabilities as well as the correctness of our AI Hardware Engineer's system knowledge and design approach. You'll actively partner with product leadership to shape and prioritize AI capability development, evaluation frameworks, and in developing scaled approaches to guide our community to successful PCB projects. In this role, you'll grow our existing Hardware Design function and team. This is a high impact, multidisciplinary role for someone who has experience building complex electronics that shipped at scale (e.g., smartphones, wearables, high performance compute, networking, robotics) and loves translating real world engineering constraints into powerful tools and AI behaviors. Be the design partner to AI/ML - Teach the world's first AI hardware engineer how to design successful products. Define best practices, guardrails, and evaluation harnesses; curate datasets; review AI generated designs; create the AI expertise that will help more people build successful hardware on their first production run, without releasing the magic smoke. Build out the Hardware Design function - Start as a hands on manager with two existing reports. Over time, refine the team's core responsibilities, and build a larger team that produces reference designs, demos, product specs, training, and field feedback loops. Develop real hardware - Lead quick turn-around prototypes (from schematic to bring up) that exercise product/AI capabilities. Instrument designs for SI/PI and power/thermal validation; close the loop with data. Amplify user insight - Adopt ownership and improve upon current user experience signals, feedback loops, and channeling user input into our iterative product design.
