Staff/Principal, Hardware Engineer
Aurelius Systems San Francisco, California
Job Description Job Description Who We Are: Aurelius Systems is a VC backed defense tech startup building autonomous, edge deployed directed energy systems for counter-UAS. We build laser weapons to shoot down drones. We're a small team of 10 engineers, former US military operators, and subject matter experts scaling America's directed energy dominance. The first cost effective, reliable and robust laser weapon system. Our namesake isn't an accident. Marcus Aurelius wrote about doing the work in front of you, every day, without excuses. Henry Ford didn't wait for permission to reinvent manufacturing. That's how we operate - small team, unreasonable output, no hiding behind the unachievable. In addition to our San Francisco lab, we opened our Detroit manufacturing hub and field test weekly on our own 400-acre private range. The Role and Your Impact: We need a Principal Hardware Engineer to bring senior technical judgment across Archimedes hardware. You are a highly experienced builder who has seen systems go the full way. From a working prototype to hardware that ships and survives in the field. You've done it more than once. You know where systems break, where teams get stuck, and how to keep both moving. This is a technical leadership seat, not a people management seat. Your role is to raise the level of the hardware org through experience, architectural judgment, and hands-on execution. You lead by example, you unblock hard problems, and you set the technical bar for how hardware gets designed and shipped at Aurelius. You'll partner with the founders and the Director of Engineering on architecture and roadmap. You'll work directly alongside mechanical, electrical, power, embedded, and optics engineers on the hardest problems the team is facing. What You'll Own: Architectural direction across the hardware stack from mechanical, electrical, power, to embedded integration Technical decisions on the hardest problems, from concept through production readiness Pattern recognition and technical review like surfacing risk early, and catching what junior engineers miss Handson execution when the problem needs your specific experience to solve fast Design and manufacturing trades across cost, mass, reliability, schedule, and field performance Cross-team judgment when hardware, controls, optics, and software collide Setting the technical bar for design reviews, documentation quality, and release standards Mentorship by example. Engineers should learn from watching you work, not from being managed by you What We're Looking For: 10+ years designing and shipping complex hardware systems Track record taking systems the full development cycle from prototype through manufacturing and deployment Senior IC or technical leadership background at hardware companies that actually shipped Deep technical judgment across at least two of: mechanical, electrical, power electronics, embedded systems Pattern recognition from having built real systems before, especially systems that had to survive real-world conditions Comfort operating as the technical anchor on a small team, not the manager of a large one Nice to Haves: Directed energy, laser, or high-power systems experience Defense or aerospace program experience with MIL-STD or equivalent qualification Founder or founding engineer background at a hardware company Manufacturing depth as-in you've stood up production lines or worked closely with the manufacturers who do Active security clearance or ability to obtain one How You Operate: Extreme bias for action. You'd rather build a prototype tomorrow than model it for a month You characterize your own systems before the field does Comfortable with ambiguity and fast iteration in a startup environment You debug from first principles, not intuition alone Clear communicator across mechanical, electrical, optical, and software teams Self directed. You identify what needs to happen next and do it without being told Why Join Aurelius Systems: Build more in 1 month than most engineers build in 1 year. We field test weekly. Your work goes downrange, not into a filing cabinet. Career velocity is real. At 10 engineers, there are no layers between you and impact. Work on a problem that actually matters. Small cheap drones are changing warfare. Our laser systems are the asymmetric answer - infinite magazine, near zero cost per shot, scalable to every base, border, facility, and truck. Join the densest defense startup ecosystem in the country. California is where the next generation of defense companies are being built. How We Work: Core hours are Monday through Friday, 9 to 6. When we're sprinting toward a demo or field test, the team ramps up - nights, weekends, whatever it takes to ship. When the sprint lands, we ramp down. We don't manufacture intensity for show. Benefits: Competitive salary and equity United Health Care medical, dental, and vision coverage Flexible 18 days PTO plus 5 sick days Travel to field test events and range days Covered daily lunches and office snacks and drinks E-bike and scooter stipend up to $500 Direct access to leadership and real ownership over your work Export Control Notice: This role requires access to export-controlled information or items that require U.S. Person status. As defined by U.S. law, individuals who are any one of the following are considered to be a U.S. Person: (1) U.S. citizens, (2) legal permanent residents (a.k.a. green card holders), and (3) certain protected classes of asylees and refugees, as defined in 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3). Compensation Range: $255K - $305K

Failure Analysis Engineer
Zipline San Francisco, California
Job Description Job Description About Zipline Zipline is the world's largest and most experienced drone delivery service. We are on a mission to serve all humans equally by ensuring access to food, medicine and essential goods anytime, anywhere. We design, build, and operate the world's largest autonomous logistics system, delivering critical supplies quickly and reliably. Today, Zipline operates on four continents, makes a delivery somewhere in the world every 30 seconds, and has completed millions of deliveries to date, including blood, vaccines, medical supplies, food, and retail products. Our customers include the world's largest and most prominent healthcare systems, governments, retailers, restaurants and global businesses who rely on us to save lives, reduce emissions, increase economic opportunity, and provide delivery from point A to point B as fast as possible. The drone is only 15% of what we've built to enable seamless, reliable, global operations. Our system strengthens supply chains, reduces congestion, and gives people time back. With more than 140 million commercial autonomous miles safely flown, Zipline is redefining access to healthcare, consumer products, and food across the globe. We operate at a global scale and are looking for practical problem solvers who thrive on real-world challenges and rapid growth. Our team is motivated by building systems that have a direct, meaningful impact on people's lives and by scaling the future of logistics. We are seeking people who sculpt from first principles, enjoy facing adversity, and can do the impossible at record breaking speeds. About You and The Role Zipline's autonomous delivery systems depend on reliable avionics electronics, flex circuits, harnesses, and connectors operating through vibration, repeated motion, temperature cycling, moisture, and manufacturing variation. As a Failure Analysis Engineer, you will investigate failures from fielded systems, development testing, life testing, and manufacturing. You will help reproduce failures, isolate electrical faults, inspect hardware, analyze data, and develop evidence-supported conclusions. This is a hands-on role suited to an early-career engineer or highly technical hardware professional who enjoys working in the lab and wants to develop deeper expertise in electronics, materials, reliability, and physical failure analysis. What You'll Do Investigate failures involving flex circuits, rigid-flex assemblies, PCBAs, connectors, harnesses, solder joints, vias, and electronic components. Preserve failed hardware and collect relevant configuration, test, manufacturing, service, and field data. Reproduce intermittent failures under representative electrical, mechanical, thermal, and environmental conditions. Troubleshoot hardware using schematics, wiring diagrams, multimeters, oscilloscopes, power supplies, electronic loads, logic analyzers, thermal imaging, and protocol tools. Analyze telemetry, test logs, measurements, and inspection results to identify patterns and narrow possible causes. Perform hands-on inspection and support physical analysis using microscopy, X-ray, cross-sectioning, and other appropriate techniques. Develop and execute experiments that prove or disprove suspected failure mechanisms. Use structured methods such as fault trees, 5-Why, fishbone analysis, and 8D to separate symptoms from root cause. Work with Electrical, Mechanical, Test, Reliability, Manufacturing, Quality, and Supplier Engineering to review evidence and determine next steps. Support corrective actions involving product design, manufacturing processes, suppliers, inspection, diagnostics, and end-of-line testing. Verify that corrective actions address the original failure and do not introduce new risks. Write clear failure-analysis reports documenting the hardware configuration, evidence, methods, results, conclusions, and recommended next steps. Maintain a searchable record of failure symptoms, mechanisms, root causes, and validated fixes. Track investigation turnaround time, no-trouble-found rate, corrective-action status, recurrence, and field-failure reduction. What You'll Bring Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, or a related field, or equivalent hands-on technical experience. Hands-on comfort working with electronics, hardware assemblies, and laboratory equipment. Ability to read electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, PCB layouts, engineering drawings, and component datasheets. Strong troubleshooting fundamentals and a methodical approach to isolating ambiguous or intermittent failures. Experience using standard electrical test equipment such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, power supplies, and logic analyzers. Practical data-analysis skills using Python, MATLAB, JMP, SQL, or equivalent tools. Ability to organize data, identify trends, compare test populations, and communicate what the evidence does and does not support. Curiosity about how electronic, mechanical, material, manufacturing, and environmental factors interact. Clear technical writing and the ability to document assumptions, results, uncertainty, and next steps. Willingness to learn new laboratory, sample-preparation, inspection, and analysis methods. This role is based in South San Francisco and requires regular hands-on work in the laboratory. Occasional travel to suppliers, manufacturers, test facilities, and external analysis laboratories may be required. Nice to Have Demonstrated experience in electronics failure analysis, hardware reliability, product engineering, hardware test, or high-reliability hardware debugging. Knowledge of flex and rigid-flex construction, PCB fabrication, SMT assembly, soldering, crimping, connectors, or electronics manufacturing. Experience with microscopy, X-ray, CT, cross-sectioning, SEM/EDS, dye-and-pry, or other physical FA techniques. Experience with vibration, shock, temperature cycling, humidity, bend cycling, or accelerated-life testing. Experience supporting corrective actions across design, manufacturing, quality, or supplier teams. Familiarity with high-speed interfaces, CAN, Ethernet, SerDes, cameras, RF, motor controls, or power electronics. Familiarity with IPC standards or structured processes such as FRACAS, CAPA, or 8D. Experience in aerospace, robotics, automotive, medical devices, or high-volume electronics. What Success Looks Like Failures are reproduced and narrowed to an evidence-supported cause within an agreed turnaround time. Investigation reports are clear enough for another engineer or technician to understand and continue the work. Intermittent and no-trouble-found returns decrease as diagnostic methods improve. Findings result in better designs, manufacturing controls, inspections, and validation tests. The engineer steadily develops deeper ownership of increasingly complex failure investigations. Industrial Automation & Systems Specialist
Symbrium, Inc. Columbia, South Carolina
Job Description Job Description Are You the Person Everyone Calls When the Plant Stops? You may currently be called a controls technician, automation specialist, PLC programmer, electrical technician, maintenance technician, or controls engineer. Your title and degree matter less to us than your ability to understand a complex industrial system, find the real source of a problem, and make it work. Factory Systems is looking for a smart, hands-on industrial problem-solver who understands that a production system is more than its PLC. Machines, sensors, wiring, drives, networks, computers, databases, software, operators, and processes all must work together. We need someone who can determine which part is actually causing the problem and take ownership of fixing it. The strongest candidate may be largely self-taught. You may have learned industrial automation because you were curious, because nobody else could solve the problem, or because keeping the plant running depended on you. If you are ready to leave shift maintenance and the daily production-floor grind for a clean, professional engineering environment with greater variety, autonomy, and technical responsibility, we would like to talk with you. What You Will Do Support industrial controls, manufacturing software, and connected production systems Troubleshoot problems involving PLCs, HMIs, sensors, drives, wiring, industrial networks, Windows computers, databases, and production equipment Take ownership of customer problems from the initial call through final resolution Determine whether a problem is electrical, mechanical, controls-related, network-related, software-related, or operational Connect both modern and legacy production equipment to data-collection and manufacturing-information systems Modify and maintain PLC and HMI applications Support industrial computers, workstations, databases, communications, and system interfaces Perform remote troubleshooting and travel to customer facilities when on-site work is necessary Assist with system installation, commissioning, upgrades, backups, and recovery Document system configurations, changes, and effective troubleshooting procedures Identify recurring problems and develop standardized, repeatable solutions Help less-experienced team members develop practical troubleshooting and implementation skills Work directly with customer maintenance, engineering, production, and IT personnel Escalate genuine architectural, safety, or high-risk issues when appropriate We are looking for someone who: Is naturally curious about how machines and industrial systems work Enjoys solving problems that cross traditional technical boundaries Can troubleshoot logically instead of changing parts until something works Is comfortable working independently and asking for help when appropriate Takes personal ownership of problems and follows them through resolution Can explain technical issues clearly to both technical and nontechnical people Is dependable and understands the importance of supporting operating production systems Wants broader challenges and greater responsibility than maintaining the same equipment every day Values practical accomplishment more than titles or organizational status Desired Experience Candidates should have approximately three or more years of hands-on experience in industrial automation, plant maintenance, manufacturing systems, machine building, systems integration, or a similar environment. Useful experience includes: Allen-Bradley/Rockwell or Siemens PLCs HMI or SCADA configuration and troubleshooting Variable-frequency drives, servos, sensors, and industrial instrumentation Industrial Ethernet and machine networks OPC Classic, OPC UA, Ethernet/IP, Modbus, or vendor-specific protocols RS-232, RS-485, and other legacy communications Microsoft Windows computers and basic network troubleshooting Microsoft SQL Server or other relational databases Manufacturing data collection, production tracking, OEE, quality, or reporting systems CNC equipment, robots, assembly equipment, test systems, or other automated machinery Electrical drawings, control panels, and field wiring System commissioning and production startup You do not need experience in every area listed above. We are more interested in your ability to learn, troubleshoot, and connect the pieces than in matching every keyword. Education A degree is not required. An associate degree, engineering-technology degree, technical-school education, military technical training, apprenticeship, or relevant industry certifications are useful. Demonstrated hands-on ability and a history of solving difficult industrial problems are more important than formal credentials. The Working Environment This position is based primarily at our Columbia facility in a clean, professional engineering environment. It is not a shift-maintenance position, although occasional customer emergencies and site travel are part of supporting industrial systems. The pressure here is different from the daily production-floor grind. You will be expected to: Learn unfamiliar equipment and processes Manage several priorities Communicate directly with customers Exercise sound judgment Take responsibility for delivering a working solution In return, you will have greater variety, technical autonomy, visibility, and the opportunity to grow into broader system and project responsibility. Employment Requirements Reliable transportation and the ability to commute consistently to our Columbia facility Ability and willingness to travel periodically to customer sites Ability to work safely in industrial environments when visiting customer facilities Legal authorization to work in the United States without current or future employer sponsorship Ability to satisfy applicable export-control and customer-facility access requirements About Factory Systems Factory Systems develops and supports industrial controls, manufacturing software, machine-connectivity systems, data-acquisition solutions, and custom production technology. Our work spans software, controls, networks, databases, machinery, test equipment, and manufacturing operations. We support established, mission-critical production systems while developing new connected-factory and digital-transformation solutions. We value curiosity, practical ability, accountability, and people who take pride in making complicated systems work. Company Description Symbrium is often referred to by our customers as "an engineer's engineering company." We deliver next generation process verification, specialized manufacturing equipment, and enterprise quality management software to some of the top engineering and manufacturing organizations around the world.
