Sr. Sensor Engineer - Data Protection (Hybrid)
CrowdStrike Sunnyvale, California
Job Description As a global leader in cybersecurity, CrowdStrike protects the people, processes and technologies that drive modern organizations. Since 2011, our mission hasn't changed - we're here to stop breaches, and we've redefined modern security with the world's most advanced AI-native platform. We work on large scale distributed systems, processing almost 3 trillion events per day and this traffic is growing daily. Our customers span all industries, and they count on CrowdStrike to keep their businesses running, their communities safe and their lives moving forward. We're proud to work for a mission-driven company leveraging AI to transform the way we work. CrowdStrikers drive their careers through flexibility and autonomy while also being expected to contribute to a culture of responsible AI adoption, experimentation, and innovation. We use an AI-first mindset as a force multiplier to proactively and continuously accelerate execution, build expertise, uncover insights, and solve complex problems. We're always looking to add talented CrowdStrikers to the team who have limitless passion, a relentless focus on innovation and a fanatical commitment to our customers, our community and each other. Ready to join a mission that matters? The future of cybersecurity starts with you. About the Team: You'll be joining the Data Protection Team in our Data Security Product Group, whose mission is to build a unified data security system which enables customers to identify and investigate insider threats, identify access to and movement of sensitive data, and ensure regulatory compliance by mitigating data loss risk. About the Role: CrowdStrike Falcon is a two-component security product. One component is a "sensor": a driver installed on client machines that observes system activity and recognizes malicious behavior, then provides on-box prevention capability and remote telemetry to the Falcon cloud. The sensor processes thousands of events per second to provide deep visibility into operations on the endpoint, and performs rich correlation and computation to identify malicious events and block malicious activity. The cloud component aggregates sensor telemetry for each customer's network, correlates malicious behavior across multiple machines, and presents our customers' operations teams with a prioritized summary of the threats detected in their environments. This is a Senior Windows Kernel Developer role in the engineering team that delivers data protection-focused functionality in the sensor (lightweight agent) on Windows. Engineers on the team own the design and development of core features on the platform, operating across both kernel and user mode. The team operates under Agile development principles and ships frequently. As AI-driven tools and agents become increasingly prevalent on the endpoint, our data protection capabilities must evolve to understand and account for that activity. Engineers on this team are expected to develop solutions that are AI-aware, including reasoning about how AI agent behavior intersects with data access and movement patterns we monitor and protect against. This is a hybrid role based out of our offices in Sunnyvale, CA, Redmond, WA, Austin, TX, Arlington, VA, Boston, MA and NYC, NY. What You'll Do: Design and develop data protection-focused functionality spanning kernel-mode components, including Windows filesystem minifilter drivers, and user-mode components on Windows systems Implement new data protection capabilities across a growing set of data access and transfer scenarios on the endpoint Build and maintain AI-aware detection and protection logic, accounting for the ways AI agents and tools interact with sensitive data on the endpoint Own features from design to delivery, including post-ship support and customer issue resolution Collaborate with multi-functional teams across various physical locations Leverage AI-assisted development tools to improve engineering productivity and solution quality Other projects as assigned What You'll Need: Degree in Computer Science (or professional experience in kernel mode/user mode development on Windows in C/C++) Ability to develop high-quality code in C++ Windows filesystem minifilter driver development experience Experience developing across both kernel mode and user mode on Windows, with a strong understanding of kernel-to-user space IPC best practices Understanding of the Windows filesystem filter model, the basics of local and remote filesystem implementations, and the corresponding interfaces at the filesystem minifilter level Experience with kernel-level debugging processes and tools Ability to demonstrate C/C++ and Windows kernel/user mode development capabilities, be it through job experience, schoolwork, or contributions to community projects Proven experience utilizing AI technologies to enhance decision-making, streamline workflows and processes, improve efficiency and drive business outcomes. Bonus Points: Familiarity with AI agent ecosystems and how AI-driven tools interact with the filesystem and operating system at a behavioral level Experience with or interest in AI-assisted development workflows, including agentic coding tools such as Claude Code Experience in the security industry, particularly in endpoint or data security Benefits of Working at CrowdStrike: Market leader in compensation and equity awards Comprehensive physical and mental wellness programs Competitive vacation and holidays for recharge Paid parental and adoption leaves Professional development opportunities for all employees regardless of level or role Employee Networks, geographic neighborhood groups, and volunteer opportunities to build connections Vibrant office culture with world class amenities Great Place to Work Certified across the globe CrowdStrike is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. We are committed to fostering a culture of belonging where everyone is valued for who they are and empowered to succeed. We support veterans and individuals with disabilities through our affirmative action program. CrowdStrike is committed to providing equal employment opportunity for all employees and applicants for employment. The Company does not discriminate in employment opportunities or practices on the basis of race, color, creed, ethnicity, religion, sex (including pregnancy or pregnancy-related medical conditions), sexual orientation, gender identity, marital or family status, veteran status, age, national origin, ancestry, physical disability (including HIV and AIDS), mental disability, medical condition, genetic information, membership or activity in a local human rights commission, status with regard to public assistance, or any other characteristic protected by law. We're always looking to add talented CrowdStrikers to the team who have limitless passion, a relentless focus on innovation and a fanatical commitment to our customers, our community and each other. Ready to join a mission that matters? The future of cybersecurity starts with you. About The Role: CrowdStrike Falcon is a two-component security product. One component is the "Sensor" - a lightweight agent installed on endpoint systems that observes system activity, recognizes malicious behavior, provides on-box prevention capability, and sends telemetry to the Falcon cloud. The cloud component aggregates Sensor telemetry across each customer's network, correlates malicious behavior across machines, and presents security teams with a prioritized summary of the threats detected in their environments. The Falcon Sensor runs on tens of millions of endpoints worldwide, across Windows, macOS and Linux, in both user mode and kernel mode. Engineering software at that depth and that scale is among the hardest problems in the industry, and CrowdStrike holds the Sensor to an exceptionally high standard of quality, performance and engineering rigor. Sustaining that standard requires a team with true mastery of what software does at runtime, at the lowest levels of the stack. That team is Sensor Performance and Reliability - CrowdStrike's team of debug engineers. Deep runtime analysis is our craft: postmortem memory dump analysis, disassembly and reverse engineering, and source-level analysis, used to explain with precision and evidence how low-level code behaves on real systems. It is one of the most technically demanding specialties in systems engineering, and very few organizations invest in it as a discipline in its own right. We do, because at our scale the answer to "what exactly happened, and why?" has to be exact rather than approximate. Our mandate goes further than answering that question well. We're chartered to turn what we learn from deep analysis into durable engineering improvements - strengthening diagnostics, tooling, validation coverage and development practices so that lessons generalize far beyond the investigation that produced them, and so that the next analysis is faster than the last. Our work makes the product stronger, and it raises the engineering capability of every team we work with. We are hiring an entry-level engineer to join us in that mission. We do not expect you to arrive with deep Windows internals, assembly, or reverse engineering experience. Those are skills we will teach you, and you will learn them from engineers who operate at the top of this field. What we are looking for is a strong programmer with excellent problem-solving instincts and genuine curiosity about how computers actually work underneath the abstractions - someone who is drawn to a hard, ambiguous problem rather than put off by it. If you are the kind of person who cannot leave a mystery alone until you understand it completely, this is an unusually good place to build a career. Location: This is a hybrid role based out of one of the posted locations: Redmond, WA or Sunnyvale, CA, with a combination of in-office and remote work. What You'll Do: Analyze the runtime behavior of complex low-level software across user mode and kernel mode on Windows, primarily through postmortem memory dump analysis in WinDbg. Work from raw memory, register state and disassembly to a precise, evidence-backed account of what executing code did and why - and hold yourself to a high evidentiary bar in reaching it. Correlate your analysis with source code, applying reverse engineering and disassembly techniques where symbols, source or context are incomplete. Drive investigations to accurate, well-reasoned conclusions rather than plausible-sounding ones, and communicate confidence and uncertainty honestly. Partner with Sensor development teams to translate your findings into concrete, well-designed engineering improvements. Generalize from individual investigations: recognize patterns, and champion improvements to tooling, diagnostics, automated validation and engineering practice that raise the reliability bar broadly rather than locally. Build and improve the tooling, automation and analysis techniques that make deep runtime analysis faster, more repeatable and more accessible - for our team and for Sensor engineers across the company. Write clearly and precisely for engineering, quality and leadership audiences. A first-rate technical analysis is only as valuable as its reader's ability to act on it. Collaborate with engineering teams across multiple locations and timezones, including Sensor platform, detection and OS-specialist teams. What You'll Need: BS in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent practical experience. Solid working knowledge of C and C++, and the ability to read and reason about code you did not write. Good foundational knowledge of data structures and algorithms. Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, and comfort working with incomplete information - much of this work involves reconstructing runtime behavior from partial evidence. Genuine curiosity about systems fundamentals: operating system internals, computer architecture, memory management, concurrency, compilers and assembly. You should want to learn these deeply. Persistence and intellectual honesty: the willingness to keep digging until you actually know the answer, and to say clearly when you don't yet. Good written and verbal communication skills. Ability to take ownership of your work and follow it through to resolution. Ability to communicate, collaborate, and work effectively in a globally distributed team. Proven experience utilizing AI technologies to enhance decision-making, streamline workflows and processes, improve efficiency and drive business outcomes. Bonus Points: Any exposure to debugging tools and techniques - WinDbg, GDB, LLDB, or similar - including as a hobby, in coursework, or in CTFs. Coursework, internships, or personal projects involving operating system internals, kernel or driver development, systems programming, or computer architecture. Familiarity with x86-64 or ARM64 assembly and the ability to read disassembly. Exposure to reverse engineering, malware analysis, or vulnerability research. Experience with Windows internals specifically (processes, threads, virtual memory, synchronization, the Windows kernel and driver model). Scripting experience, particularly Python, for automation and analysis tooling. Interest in or experience with the security landscape. Benefits of Working at CrowdStrike: Market leader in compensation and equity awards Comprehensive physical and mental wellness programs Competitive vacation and holidays for recharge Paid parental and adoption leaves Professional development opportunities for all employees regardless of level or role Employee Networks, geographic neighborhood groups, and volunteer opportunities to build connections Vibrant office culture with world class amenities Great Place to Work Certified across the globe CrowdStrike is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. Ready to join a mission that matters? The future of cybersecurity starts with you. About the Role: Join our Falcon Exposure Management team as one of the first engineers on a new, greenfield initiative. You'll help design and build a product from the ground up, shaping its architecture and its direction. This is a problem where AI changes what's achievable. It requires reasoning and judgment over large volumes of continuously changing data, at the scale CrowdStrike operates - work that conventional rule-based systems have only partially addressed. We're treating agentic reasoning as a core architectural element rather than a feature layered onto an existing system, which means real decisions are still open: where reasoning belongs, where determinism is the better answer, and how to make either hold up in production. A security background isn't required. What matters is strong systems engineering, experience running AI-based systems in production, and the curiosity to get up to speed in a new domain quickly. What You'll Do: Design and build a new product from the ground up, making foundational architecture and technology decisions Build the distributed systems foundation: high throughput, large-scale data processing, and the reliability our customers expect Build agentic capabilities into the product - systems that reason over real data, use tools, and produce explainable results customers can act on Take AI capabilities from prototype to production, owning latency, cost, correctness, and evaluation Design the guardrails and policies that make autonomous reasoning safe for enterprise customers Turn open-ended problems into scoped, shippable increments Set the technical bar early on quality, testing, and observability, and help grow the engineers around you What You'll Need: 5+ years of production experience building and maintaining systems at scale Strong proficiency in Go, Python, or Java, with solid distributed systems experience - concurrency, partitioning, backpressure, and failure handling under load Experience shipping LLM-backed systems to production, including ownership of reliability, cost, and correctness Practical experience with agentic loops - designing or operating agents that invoke tools and act on real data, and choosing sensibly among planning, reflection, and multi-step patterns A working approach to non-determinism: structured outputs, schema validation, retries, self-checks, and graceful fallbacks Strong engineering judgment - the ability to break down an unfamiliar problem, reason about tradeoffs, and choose the simplest approach that works Hands-on use of frontier-model SDKs (Anthropic, OpenAI, or similar) and AI-assisted development tools, with a realistic view of their capabilities and limits. Proven experience utilizing AI technologies to enhance decision-making, streamline workflows and processes, improve efficiency and drive business outcomes. Bonus Points: Experience with evaluation and observability tooling for agentic systems Experience with RAG pipelines, vector stores, or retrieval-augmented agents Experience with graph databases and complex data modeling Experience in cybersecurity - welcome, though not required Benefits of Working at CrowdStrike: Market leader in compensation and equity awards Comprehensive physical and mental wellness programs Competitive vacation and holidays for recharge Paid parental and adoption leaves Professional development opportunities for all employees regardless of level or role Employee Networks, geographic neighborhood groups, and volunteer opportunities to build connections Vibrant office culture with world class amenities Great Place to Work Certified across the globe CrowdStrike is proud to be an equal opportunity employer.
