This is a brand new role, made possible because we have secured funds from the National Lottery, to develop and grow ERIC's Family Services over the next three years! Building our volunteering programme is key if we are to successfully expand ERIC's Family Services. With your help we want to welcome new volunteers to ERIC with a passion for helping others, bringing their life experiences, skills and attributes to the ERIC Team. Equally we want to make sure our volunteers feel valued and supported in their role as well as enabled to build the skills and experience they might be seeking for their futures. This a fantastic opportunity to bring your skills, enthusiasm and new perspectives to a newly created role. If you are an experienced volunteer coordinator with a proven track record, we would be delighted to hear from you. However, what is just as important is that we find the right person who really wants to make a difference to the lives of children and their families. So if you have what we are looking for and feel drawn to the role and the work of ERIC, we'd love to hear from you too. Background: Childhood continence conditions are common. 1 in 12 children are affected by a bowel or bladder problem: that's around three children in every primary school class. And, in an average secondary school, around 40 young people struggle with a wetting or soiling issue. If you're shocked by these figures, you're not alone. Many people aren't aware of the scale of the problem or the impact it can have on young lives. The embarrassment and shame surrounding continence problems, means that many young people and their families are suffering in silence with no-one to turn to. Battling a wetting or soiling problem can ruin a young person's life. Living in constant fear of the next accident, particularly if it happens at school or with friends. Many affected children struggle with anxiety, depression and low self-esteem. Cruel name calling and bullying are commonplace, and many young people feel isolated and alone. Because of their condition, children and young people miss out on school trips, sports days and sleepovers. Many also struggle educationally, having had to miss out on schooling because of their health. In some cases, children are being pulled out of school to be home-schooled because of a lack of support in the school. ERIC's new family services will be more flexible and responsive, enabling us to reach out and support many more children, young people and their families than ever before. Families will be supported to manage or overcome their child's continence difficulties so that: Children and young people are no longer excluded from educational and social activities and are freed from feelings of shame and isolation Parents and carers are better equipped and more resilient in supporting their children to overcome their challenges. About the role: During the Covid pandemic the demand for ERIC's services grew rapidly, forcing us to do things differently. We introduced volunteers to respond to parents and carers contacting the ERIC Helpline and it has been a great success. We've learned a lot and we've grown from two volunteers initially to six all volunteering for at least one shift a week. We now need to scale up if we are to meet the continually growing demand for our services. Currently the ERIC Helpline supports over 3,200 people a year and our aim is to at least double this, plus provide support by way of webinars, short, pre-recorded video's, resources and a peer to peer support line. This is an exciting challenge and one which we've been working towards for the last 18 months. ERIC has also been fortunate in securing the support of a small number of people volunteering in different areas across ERIC. Their contribution is hugely valued and we see real potential in growing volunteering opportunities across the charity. This volunteer coordinator role is new, and key responsibilities are set out below. We are keen that the successful candidate works within these parameters however we may not have thought of everything! So the postholder will be prepared to make changes driven by what has worked (and what's not!), incorporating evidence of good practice and reflecting the needs of our communities, the organisation and volunteers. We will provide support, mentoring and training to the successful candidate. Job description: As Volunteer Coordinator you will be responsible for developing and delivering ERIC's volunteering programme.
