Lead Developer - AWS Serverless, C# - London
We are looking for two lead developers to join our growing team!
You will be helping to build our platform using technologies including DynamoDB, Elastic Search, C#, Angular and Xamarin. You will have the opportunity to help us shape how we develop, fulfilling implementations for clients and enhancing our core platform.
Our solutions are addressing ‘retail simplification’, enabling organisation who are burdened with legacy solutions to adopt modern retail best practice.
To support our growth and accelerate our product development we are seeking candidates with strong development skills and a track record of delivering software projects. Any exposure to the retail sector would be an advantage, though not essential.
We understand candidates will not necessarily have experience of our whole technical stack. So we are looking for people with the potential to broaden their existing skill set.
If you want to help lead the development of our platforms, and if you have some of the following experience, please get in touch!
Relevant Skills
C#
Writing and consuming Web Services
Team leading
Angular / Web Front End development (We are currently using Angular 7)
NoSQL (ideally DynamoDB)
Serverless concepts – AWS Lambdas or Azure Functions
AWS
Location
Most of our developers work from home, however we do have the option of a London office, there is also the possibility of client site visits.

About the role
We are seeking to appoint to an exciting new Full-Stack Development Lead role on a permanent, full time basis. This is a pivotal post within our established and highly impactful IT Team, which has been designed to ensure that our IT and software development operations run smoothly.
As a senior member of the IT team, you will support service delivery by leading, driving and delivering longer-term technical projects to meet deadlines and by maintaining agreed service levels. This new role builds our IT team’s resilience at a senior technical level; you will report to the Head of IT who, amongst other management duties, acts as the overall IT architect and also leads, drives, and delivers various technical projects. As a senior leader, you will also act as a mentor to more junior team members to assist them in developing existing skills and gaining new ones.
This post presents a great opportunity to take ownership of various projects previously overseen by the Head of IT, which could include: maintenance and further development of the departmental website; redesigning and reimplementing the examinations database; and developing various helper and automation scripts for the maintenance and automation of our IT systems. You can find a full list of potential projects outlined in the job description document.
Although you will be primarily based in central Oxford, the department are open to a hybrid working arrangement at typically two days per week from home.
About you
We are looking for candidates who are able to demonstrate a thorough understanding of the principles and technical processes of full-stack web application development, including substantial development experience with an expert level in at least one of Python, PHP or Ruby on Rails, and substantial frontend development experience (e.g. using JavaScript, CSS, HTML).
You will have an honours degree or equivalent experience, with excellent communication and interpersonal skills, in particular the ability to work very closely with a variety of end users including senior academic and professional services staff, students, visitors and collaborators, and to communicate deeply technical concepts to non-technical audiences. You will be highly self-motivated and enjoy working both independently and as an effective member of a small team, with a light management touch.
We proudly hold a departmental Athena SWAN Silver Award and an institutional Race Equality Charter Bronze Award, which guide our progress towards advancing racial and gender equality. As part of our strategic aim to improve staff equality and diversity, we would particularly welcome applications from BAME candidates, who are currently under-represented in positions of this type within the department.
Application Process
If you wish to speak to someone informally about this post, please contact Dr Waldemar Schlackow (Head of IT) [ mailto:waldemar.schlackow@maths.ox.ac.uk ] or Dr Keith Gillow (Director of IT and Physical Resources) [ mailto:keith.gillow@maths.ox.ac.uk ]. Informal enquiries regarding the application process should be directed to the Recruitment Coordinator (email: vacancies@maths.ox.ac.uk ), quoting vacancy reference 161377.
Applicants should read the job description document before writing their application. You will be required to upload a supporting statement, setting out how you meet the selection criteria, a curriculum vitae and the names and contact details of two referees as part of your online application.

Starling engineers love building things, creating new stuff, learning new technologies and working with others across all areas of the bank to bring brilliant products and features to life. Our engineers are excited about helping us deliver new features, regardless of what their primary tech stack may be. We offer a flat working structure and are looking for engineers at all levels to join the team. We value people being engaged and caring about customers, caring about the code they write and the contribution they make to Starling. People with a broad ability to apply themselves to a multitude of problems and challenges, who can work across teams do great things here at Starling. We're open-minded when it comes to hiring and we care more about aptitude and attitude than specific experience or qualifications. If you care enough to find elegant solutions to difficult technical problems, we'd love to hear from you. Our mobile engineers work in cross-functional feature teams arranged across broader engineering groups. You are empowered to make the decisions necessary for the platform and to provide insight to the team leads on such projects. You'll also be working closely with other mobile engineers with a variety of experience levels and interests. Expect to be committing, reviewing and shipping new code right from the first week! Requirements We have built our entire banking platform in house and mostly in Java. We are looking for people who want to work on building the tooling that is used by our engineers on a daily basis. As a fully digital bank, we are looking for engineers that are able to understand and prioritise security when implementing new features, fixing bugs or making technical improvements, across all the layers. Our team is designing, building and releasing new screens every day, for this reason we are interested in people with a particular focus on Accessibility along with writing clean and maintainable code. The way to thrive and shine within Starling is to be a self-driven individual and be able to take full ownership of everything around you: From building the code, shipping and maintaining it, to sharing knowledge with your colleagues and making sure all processes are efficient and productive to deliver the best possible results for our customers. Our application is in the top chart of finance apps in the UK, with over 300K ratings and an average rating of 4.9. We also won the Best British Banking App award in 2021! Our iOS application is entirely written in Swift. It is highly modular and we use MVVM-C architecture to maximise code reusability and testing. We also value simplicity over complexity, fewer moving parts means fewer faults and easier comprehension. Some of the well known frameworks and tools we use: RxSwift - as our reactive programming framework; SnapKit - as our auto layout DSL, though we have an in-house framework built on top of SnapKit which allows us to write declarative, SwiftUI like layout code for UIKit. Realm - as the application main persistence layer; Sourcery and SwiftGen - for various code generation tasks. SwiftFormat, SwiftLint and Danger - to enforce high code quality standards. Etc. We also built in-house tools and frameworks as developer productivity and automation is paramount to us. We are looking for iOS engineers to work on these apps who: Want to work on a feature rich mobile app with millions of customers; Can produce robust, well tested code that will give our customers the reliability that they need; Care about the product, the user experience and the design; Think (like us) that a small number of empowered developers is the right way to deliver software; Our application is built with UIKit, knowing its concepts and components is a must. We use RxSwift in our project, experience with reactive programming will be a plus but is not required. Benefits We have a hybrid approach to working here at Starling - our preference is that you're located within a commutable distance of one of our offices so that we're able to interact and collaborate in person. We don't like to mandate how much you visit the office and work from home, that's to be agreed upon between you and your manager. 25 days holiday (plus take your public holiday allowance whenever works best for you) An extra day's holiday for your birthday Annual leave is increased with length of service, and you can choose to buy or sell up to five extra days off! 16 hours paid volunteering time a year Salary sacrifice, company enhanced pension scheme Life insurance at 4x your salary Private Medical Insurance with VitalityHealth including mental health support and cancer care. Partner benefits include discounts with Waitrose, Mr&Mrs Smith and Peloton Generous family-friendly policies Perkbox membership giving access to retail discounts, a wellness platform for physical and mental health, and weekly free and boosted perks Access to initiatives like Cycle to Work and Salary Sacrificed Gym partnerships About Us: You may be put off applying for a role because you don't tick every box. Forget that! While we can't accommodate every flexible working request, we're always open to discussion. So, if you're excited about working with us, but aren't sure if you're 100% there yet, get in touch anyway. We're on a mission to radically reshape banking - and that starts with our brilliant team. Whatever came before, we're proud to bring together people of all backgrounds and experiences who love working together to solve problems. From financial analytics to drug discovery, cyber threat detection to robotics disaster recovery, our technology empowers engineers around the world to tackle a higher order of complexity in data and knowledge. We've built a pioneering developer community of 9,000+ engineers, spread over 20 countries, and counting. To continue pursuing this vision, we need to build a team of individuals who are not just the best and brightest in what they do, but also driven by a strong sense of purpose and compassion for the world. You will be joining a team that cares deeply not just about the intelligence of the technology, but also the elegance and simplicity of the solution. We have a strong sense of urgency, but we always care about 'why' something needs to be developed, and we make sure that we work purposefully. Although we are expected to be independent in delivering our responsibilities, we collaborate in perfecting our ideas and solutions. Every time we have an opportunity to improve our workflow, infrastructure or architecture to achieve better performance, user experience or developer productivity, we take that opportunity, and we grow.

We are the creators of the strongly-typed database, TypeDB, and its query language, TypeQL. Our technology helps organisations in various industries, including Life Sciences, Defence & Security, Financial Services and Robotics, to build intelligent systems that tackle complex problems.
Salary 65,000 - 85,000 GBP per year Requirements: - Bachelors degree in Computer Science or Software Engineering 3+ years of working experience as a Software Engineer Strong in developing low-level systems in C, C++, Java, Kotlin, or Rust (most ideally) Strong in developing OOP architectures Strong in multithreading and concurrent programming Strong in database systems Strong communication, documentation, writing, and presentation skills Experience in working with distributed computing frameworks (such as Hadoop, Spark, Cassandra, Kafka, ZeroMQ, Akka, Kubernetes, Zookeeper, etc.) Experience in using cloud infrastructures tools like Kubernetes, Docker, Terraform, and/or Nomad Experience in using a cloud service: AWS, Google Cloud, or Microsoft Azure Experience with client-server architectures Experience with open-source software development and community Responsibilities: - As a Software Engineer, you will be working on various products that make up our technology stack, which includes (but is not limited to): TypeDB: our strongly-typed database with a rich and logical type system, that empowers you to tackle complex problems, with TypeQL is its query language. TypeDB is built with open-source distributed technology stacks: RocksDB, ANTLR, SCIP, Bazel, and GRPC. Today, TypeDB is written in Java, but we are in the process of rewriting it in Rust, with clients implemented in multiple languages, such as Java, Python, and Node.js. The extensive build system of TypeDB is built with Kotlin and Bazel. TypeDB Cluster: the distributed version of TypeDB, using the same open-source distributed technologies (plus ZeroMQ), built through a reactive architecture implementing the Raft replication algorithms. TypeDB Cluster serves as our commercial offering that provides TypeDB users with scalability, security, configurability and management tools to effectively use TypeDB in a production environment. Today, TypeDB Cluster is written in Java, but we're now rewriting it in Rust. The extensive build system is also built with Kotlin and Bazel. TypeDB Studio: the Integrated Development Environment (IDE) of TypeDB. Studio allows developers to manage their TypeDB project source code (e.g. schema and data), interactively manage the database schema, data and users, as well as query the database to produce graph visualisations of their data. Studio is built using Kotlin and Jetpack Compose. Vaticle Factory: the in-house built CI platform that automates our entire software development life cycle from testing, benchmarking, tracing, quality checking, dependency upgrading, verifying (releases), and releasing. Vaticle Factory is designed for engineering teams building distributed systems on multi-repo architectures that require performance benchmarking. Vaticle Factory is built in the cloud, using the Kubernetes technology stack. Today, Vaticle Factory is written in Java and React, but we're now rewriting it in Rust, Angular, and TypeScript. Vaticle Cloud: the cloud platform in which TypeDB will be automatically deployed, managed, and orchestrated in any of the popular cloud services: GCP, AWS, or Azure.
