Job Title - Senior Technical Architect (cloud and software) Reporting to: Head of Technology Direct Reports: (technical reports and project teams) Contract Type: Permanent Are you a Senior Technical Architect that has experience in working within the public sector and comes from a hands-on development background, ideally fluent with open source technology? Methods: Since our establishment in 1990, Methods has partnered with a range of central government departments and agencies to transform the way the public sector operates in the UK. Our mission is to help safeguard public-facing services and apply digital thinking to make sure the future of our public services is centred around our citizens. The Development Unit is a new initiative within Methods Group, focusing on Software and Cloud Engineering, Consultancy, and Cyber Security. Our aim is to deliver profitable growth and value by establishing and maintaining a strong community of practice and reputation for quality software & cloud engineering built on a DevOps culture and Continuous Delivery principles to support digital, data and technology transformation in our target markets. Job Purpose and Scope: This is a senior technology role focused on growing and improving our engineering capability, contributing to pre-sales and marketing activity, as well as the core purpose of designing, building and assuring our software and cloud outcomes. Our aim is to grow a team of architects, engineers (dev, test, ops), consultants and graduate or vocational talent into a successful consulting practice that can: Deliver company growth by winning new business (application development, cloud and platform engineering, migration) Deliver won business (on time, to budget, and to excellent quality standards) Assure effectively (ensuring we operate efficiently, innovate appropriately, and build a reputation for engineering excellence) Grow & maintain our professional accreditations & standards (eg AWS partner status and Microsoft accreditations) Build a reputation for innovation and thought-leadership As well as excellent delivery expertise and experience, bringing an ability to design, deliver and assure complex solutions; this role will contribute to pre-sales, presentations, internal projects, communities of practice, culture, knowledge transfer and supporting technical team recruitment activity. Key responsibilities: Primary: Lead our solution approach and hands-on architecture work in building and migrating applications, software, cloud infrastructure and services for our customers to support transformation outcomes (following industry standards and principles such as the Digital by Default service standard, Technology Code of Practice, AWS Well-Architected Framework, and Microsoft's Cloud Adoption Framework and Azure Architecture Framework) Lead our technical delivery teams, and ensure that our output and outcomes (solution designs, code, documentation etc) meet or exceed our delivery commitments through proactive mentoring and assurance Evangelise cloud-first, devsecops, and continuous delivery strategies, consult with clients and participate in architectural discussions to ensure solutions are designed for successful, efficient deployment and operation in the cloud Support pre-sales activity by developing compelling solution approach summaries, high level designs, estimates, presentations, product demonstrations and discussions (to support our sales and marketing team as they prospect, as well as bidding for specific opportunities) Lead technical estimating work across multiple projects, phases and client engagements Maintain good knowledge of emerging technology industry and trends relevant to software engineering, and actively promote this both internally and with our customers Build strong working relationships with senior technical individuals within our customer organisations, building trust and advocacy for our services Support and mentor more junior team members (both Methods' and client staff where needed), Support technical knowledge transfer outcomes (eg handover to clients, mentoring client staff, presenting to TDA or EAB forums etc) Secondary: Support cloud and software engineering community of practice and internal projects, as a subject expert, to build our expertise and collateral in this area both internally as well as engaging wider external communities with events and hackathons etc Build our industry recognition and credibility by attending and contributing to at industry and third-party technology conferences, trade shows and press events Author and contribute to customer and industry-facing publications such as whitepapers, blogs, articles etc, expressing our professional opinion Advise partners, Methods pre/sales & technical teams on best practice for customer facing solutions. This can be both a proactive activity where you build a plan with the partner to pursue a specific technical scenario or it can be a reactive response to a customer need or request for proposal The ideal candidate: Extensive experience in a hands-on architecture role(s) designing and implementing distributed, containerised and server-less hyperscale systems on public cloud platforms (in particular AWS and Azure, ideally Gov PaaS too) Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or equivalent Enjoy working with customers and partners in our target sectors (initially Government, Healthcare and NPO).
