Engineer (Windows Server)

Working within a collaborative team as a member of Platforms and Storage, the role is responsible for the engineering support of Windows Server Infrastructure.   The role holder is expected to contribute to infrastructure deployment designs for the development of new centralised capabilities, and to provide a support role for existing capabilities, which are based on a foundation of Windows Server.  The support remit will be focussed at the Windows Server infrastructure level, with a collaborative engagement with Middleware, Directory, Database and Application support teams.   Many of the major central IT Systems within Cardiff University have an infrastructure component, which falls into the remit of the role holder.

Opportunity

The successful candidate will work within University IT alongside well-established infrastructure, application and operations teams and will primarily take responsibility for Windows Server infrastructure. 

The role holder will collaborate with application teams to provide Windows Server based services that are aligned to the functional requirements of business applications.   The role holder will collaborate with other members of the Platforms & Storage Team with regards to the integration of Windows Server capabilities, and the alignment of Windows Server to the Microsoft Roadmap.

Working as part of a Windows Server and Database support team, there is a development opportunity for the role to pick up some BAU database level support skills, and some additional experience with Linux.

You

You are expected to hold a background of working with Windows Server within an Enterprise environment and to possess experience in the deployment of windows services on an Enterprise level. 

You will possess good powershell scripting skills, and have some experience of working with some other scripting languages.

You will possess experience of life cycle management with regards to Windows Server, and other aspects associated with the management of a large enterprise estate, such as Active Directory.

You will have experience of enterprise monitoring tools, and the challenges of monitoring and managing a large Windows Server estate.

You will be comfortable working in a fast-paced academic environment and will be a key member of the wider infrastructure team within which you will be expected to build strong, effective working relationships. You will be expected to become the subject matter expert for the services that you develop and will oversee their transition to operational teams as required. The role will require you to prioritise and manage your workload effectively and respond promptly to new requirements where necessary.

Salary: £34,304 - £40,927 per annum (Grade 6)
