An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Business Systems Developer to join a Midlands-based legal practice (in Spalding), to help develop and enhance their Case Management System.
What is a CMS?
A Case Management System allows a legal firm to manage their clients' cases – everything from onboarding and engaging with the client through to document management, diary management, time management, billing management and more. It integrates into Outlook to send e-mails automatically, it links into Word so at the press of a button on the CMS, a pre-templated Word document is created, branded and set out with all client details filled in, plug in to external APIs (google maps etc). And lots more. It's essentially the back-end system used by legal and accounting firms.
What needs to be developed?
The CMS is being ported to a web based framework, to allow for easier development and expansion from the earlier desktop versions. This means writing code to replace the desktop app with a fully featured hosted solution, porting the older databases to new ones and making sure it's running efficiently. This is an ongoing (permanent) project, as the scope will expand over time with new features being added, and old ones removed.
What are the basics that you need?
At least 1 year's experience developing in a commercial environment. If this is in a legal or similar Professional Services (accountancy, consulting etc) environment, then even better.
Experience developing web-based, database driven solutions
Familiarity with a client management system, ideally case or matter management systems
Experience of integrating solutions within Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint etc)
A thorough knowledge of reporting tools such as Crystal Reports or SQL Reporting Services
What are the main duties of this role?
Analysis of user requirements – user feedback and suggestions, business analysis – to produce high level specifications / wireframe / proof of concept demonstrations. Iterating upon these developments in line with business needs
Development and maintenance of application software within SOS Connect case & matter management system (the system in use)
Developing this into a web based (Intranet, Internet and Extranet) database driven application and reporting solutions
Creation and maintenance of data warehouses and then the associated extraction routines
High level database administration (creating, viewing, summary tables, stored procedures etc).
Set up and maintenance of integration solutions between various systems via
APIs or other methods – SOS, MS Office, print solutions etc
Undertaking planned maintenance and enhancement requests to existing applications, in line with business needs
To provide application support to calls escalated from the helpdesk (bug reports etc – users are trained, and you're not a software trainer!)
Evaluation and recommendation of commercially available software
Technical documentation of developments
To provide demonstrations and Train the Trainers in relation to new or updated systems and features.
What is the development environment?
SOS Connect (Progress database with proprietary integrated .Net development – similar to VB.net. Used for the development of Finance based workflow and reporting solutions)
